Biographical / Historical

The Housing Research Center was established at Cornell University in the fall of 1950 as a program to bring scientific research to bear on the nation's housing problems. The Center's basic objectives were too coordinate a program of basic research on housing, both urban and rural; to stimulate graduate study in the subject; and to act as a central clearinghouse for housing information. Glenn H. Beyer, a Cornell professor of housing and design, was the Center's first director; Harry J. Loberg, Director of the Sibley School of Mechanical Engineering at Cornell, served as the first chair of the Executive Committee for the Center. In 1961, the Center's name was changed to the Center for Housing and Environmental Studies, and the Executive Committee changed its name to the Governing Board.
