Biographical / Historical
Aline MacMahon was an actress in theater and film. She was born May 3, 1899 in McKeesport, Pa., and attended Barnard College. She made her Broadway debut in The Mirage (1921) and appeared in over 50 plays, including The Eve of Saint Mark (1942), Romeo and Juliet (1959), Coriolanus (1965), The Madwoman of Chaillot (1961), and Trelawny of the Wells (1975). MacMahon also had a distinguished film career, appearing in 43 films, such as Five Star Final (1931), Once in a Lifetime (1932), Kind Lady (1935), Ah, Wilderness (1935), Dragon Seed (1944), for which she won an Oscar nomination, The Search (1948), and All The Way Home (1963). She also appeared on radio and television. MacMahon was married to architect and city planner Clarence S. Stein. She died in October 1991.
