In 1961, Cornell University urged that a proposed federal water pollution research facility (later referred to as the Northeastern Regional Water Pollution Control Facility) be located near the Cornell campus in Ithaca, New York. The federal government considered the proposal for a time but ultimately declined it.

Biographical / Historical

J.L. Zwingle was Vice President at Cornell University as of the early 1960s; Gordon P. Fisher was Associate Dean of the College of Engineering. Abraham Ribicoff was the federal Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare in the Kennedy administration. Frances Perkins served as Secretary of Labor for 12 years in Franklin Roosevelt's administration, and later served as a visiting lecturer in Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations from 1957-1965.
