Biographical / Historical

Cornell University's Chemistry Research Building, now known as the Olin Chemistry Research Wing, is a seven-story building attached directly to the east end of Baker Laboratory. The University held a symposium in conjunction with the building's dedication on May 4, 1967. The symposium"Chemistry: Opportunities and Needs" focused on the Westheimer Report on basic research in chemistry, which was issued by the Committee for the Survey of Chemistry and published in June 1965 by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council. Speakers at the symposium included Frank H. Westheimer, Professor of Chemistry at Harvard University and Chairman of the Committee for the Survey of Chemistry; Robert W. Cairns, Vice President of Hercules Incorporated and President-elect of the American Chemical Society; and Leland J. Haworth, Director of the National Science Foundation. Cornell University Provost Dale R. Corson presided.
