Scope and content

Five interviews by Richard Loss with George W. Foster, Jr., a law professor at the University of Wisconsin; Jack K. McFall (1905-1990), Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, 1949-1952 and member of the Foreign Service, 1947-1956: and Carlisle Humelstine, Deputy Undersecretary of State for Administration, 1950-1952 and assistant secretary to Secretaries of State James F. Byrnes, George C. Marshall, Dean Acheson, and John Foster Dulles, focus on the Federal security program, and, more specifically, the State Department's reaction to Senator McCarthy's charges about security risks. Also contains interviews by Robert Griffin, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, relating to a counterattack organized by a group of scholars and journalists in Wisconsin, including an interview with Morris H. Rubin (editor of The Progressive, a magazine of politics, culture, and progressivism) about the preparation of the McCarthy issue of The Progressive (April 1954) and The McCarthy Record and Miles McMillan, executive publisher of the Madison Capital Times.
