ONE Incorporated was founded in 1952; at least from 1956 onward, it was based in Los Angeles, California. Its name came from a quote by Thomas Carlyle: "A mystic bond of brotherhood makes all men one." In 1956, it established the ONE Institute of Homophile Studies, which organized classes and annual conferences.
