Scope and content
The collection contains three photograph albums with photographs of circus animals, performers, and employees; four scrapbooks full of newspaper clippings, and a range of additional ephemera: correspondence written to Hawkes, membership cards, route statements, tickets, advertisement flyers, programs and more. There are over 550 items consisting of the following: 25 Martin Bros Circus Programs (1936) containing several different shows, including the Seils-Sterling's program; 41 Route Cards (schedules) for various Northeastern tours, four large scrapbooks containing clippings about Roadshow Films (16mm), which Hawkes dealt in on the side. Includes 1940s handbills about movie showings, such as Hoot Gibson in the Cowboy Counselor, sharing contracts with the Miller Bros, 101 Ranch Road Show, and Bill for the Greene Milfred Theatre, articles about the circus, its laws and how to advertise them; also included are a bill for Ben-Hur at the People's Theatre and movie programs along with newspaper articles about the circus from the 1930s &1940s, and letters from other circus owners and from a trapeze artist, animal trainer and circus manager named Sam Dock. Photograph albums contain 3 negatives, 59 slides, 9-8x10 photos and 402 photos (snapshots of varying sizes). The photographs capture circus acts, performers, animals, trainers, and audiences from the 1920s-1960s, with most dating from the 1930s-1950s.

Biographical / Historical
Clayton Hawkes was the owner of The Martin Brothers Circus, Clayton's Combined Circus, Bogart & Hawkes' and the Great American School Show. These tent shows played a large role in American entertainment from the late 19th century to the mid-twentieth century. Clayton and Madge Hawkes ran the Martin Brothers Circus (1930s), which was a tent show that wintered in Castle Creek, New York. They also created Clayton's Combined Circus, Bogart & Hawkes', and the Great American School Show.
