Biographical / Historical

In 1968, Cornell United Religious Work's Associate Director for Service Daniel Berrigan and other Catholic activists entered a government office in Catonsville, Maryland and destroyed draft cards with napalm to protest the Vietnam War. The "Catonsville Nine" were arrested, tried, and convicted. Berrigan was scheduled to begin a prison term on April 9, 1970, but he disappeared. Cornell showed its support by conducting a three-day America is Hard to Find Festival on April 17-19, 1970. The festival included a public appearance by the then-fugitive Berrigan at the "Freedom Seder" before a crowd of 15,000 in Barton Hall. Berrigan was subsequently found and arrested in August 1970; he served a prison sentence until 1972.
