Scope and content

In the first interview, on June 20, 1966, David Brandt, the president of the Executive Board, was interviewed by Gould P. Colman about what led Cornell's student government to take a position on the draft exam and Vietnam and aobut the steps that the Executive Board took following the passage of the resolutions to educate the student body about the issues involved in the referendum. Brandt was also interviewed on November 22, 1966; (3 tapes, 3 transcripts). Additional interviews were conducted by Sarah Elbert with Geoffrey Hewitt, April 18, 1968 (1 tape, 1 transcript); C. Michael Curtis, June 9, 1968 (1 tape, 1 transcript); Jane Cowan Brown, July 12, 1968 (1 transcript) and Jerald Brown (1 tape, 1 transcript); Daniel Berrigan, Sept. 18, 1968 (1 transcript); Mrs. Ethel Dancis, September 18, 1968 (1 transcript); and Bruce Dancis, November 5, 1968 (1 tape, 1 transcript). Paul Goodman was interviewed by William Tomlinson, Michael Wright, and Burton Weiss on July 20, 1968 (1 tape, 1 transcript) and by Michael Wright on July 21, 1968 (1 tape, 1 transcript).

Biographical / Historical

In May 1966, the Executive Commitee of Cornell's student government passed two resolutions, one advocating immediate withdrawal of U.S. suppor for the Ky regime in Vietnam, the other condeming the University's administration of the selective service exam. One week later a referendum was held to determine whether the decisions of the Board were in accord with student opinion. 6,554 students participated.
