Scope and content

Correspondence, notes, and documents from 1890-1891, 1897, 1907, and 1909, including glass negatives and photographic prints. Correspondence and notes relate to the history of Phi Beta Kappa and plans to produce a book on its history. Documents include Phi Beta Kappa meeting minutes from circa 1777-1781, and a typewritten transcript of those minutes, as well as the text of an oration in Syriac. Also included are extensive typewritten notes on the history of the Parmele [sic] family, whose ancestors include Elisha Parmelee. Photographs and glass negatives show the texts of several documents and the Parmelee family crest.

Biographical / Historical

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest national honor society in the United States, founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776. Elisha Parmelee was one of the original members of the society.
