Biographical / Historical

Professor Charles McCammon Mottley taught in the Department of Entomology and Limnology at the New York State College of Agriculture from 1937 until the outbreak of World War II, when he joined the Navy. After the war, he served as chief of inland fisheries research for the United States Department of the Interior. Mottley led experiments on the behavior of rainbow trout in the spring of 1942, with the assistance of the local Fly Tyers' Club in catching the trout in Cascadilla Creek, Ithaca, New York. An article on the results of the experiments, by Dwight A. Webster and G. Scott Little, was published in the Transactions of the American Fisheries Society in 1947.
