Scope and content

Newsletters, leaflets, and photographs relating to C.E.F. Guterman, the Agricultural Experiment Station, or the New York State College of Agriculture. Includes many issues of the New York State Extension Service newsletter, "Current Episodes" (1945-1952, incomplete), individual issues of other newsletters, a short pamphlet on the School of Nutrition at Cornell University (1940s), and many photographs of faculty and staff of the New York State College of Agriculture, the Agricultural Experiment Station, or other institutions in the field. Individuals shown include Liberty Hyde Bailey (in circa 1898 and in 1952), H.H. Whetzel, and many others, most of them unidentified. Also included are photographs of the New York State College of Agriculture in circa 1910 and 1929.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Edward F. Guterman served as the Director of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, and Director of Research for the New York State College of Agriculture. Herbert Hice Whetzel, a mycologist and plant pathologist, was the head of the Department of Agricultural Botany (later Department of Plant Pathology) at Cornell University from 1906-1922; never received a Ph. D., but was promoted to professor in 1909. Liberty Hyde Bailey was a botanist, a prolific author, and Dean of the New York State College of Agriculture.
