Scope and content

Letters, speeches, press releases, reports, memoranda, contracts, and other documents relating to the business of the Treasurer's Office. Topics include the meetings and activities of the Listening Post Group, United States federal taxation as it affects universities, and plans to build more student housing at Cornell to accommodate the postwar influx of students. Collection includes a copy of Cornell University's bylaws as of January 1952, as well as United States Treasury Department press releases on the taxation of small businesses and of farmers' cooperatives (1947), and a transcript of testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee by John Gerdes, a lawyer for New York University, on the issue of tax exemption for educational institutions (1947). Correspondents include George Rogalsky, Arthur Adams, George Frank, George Brakeley, Frederick Ackerman, and Deane W. Malott.

Biographical / Historical

George F. Rogalsky was the Treasurer of Cornell University in the period from 1946-1948, and Arthur S. Adams was the Provost. George S. Frank was the Manager of Purchases. George A. Brakeley was the Vice President and Treasurer of Princeton University. Frederick L. Ackerman was an architect with whom the University discussed building student housing in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Deane Waldo Malott became President of Cornell in 1951. The Listening Post Group was an informal group consisting of administrators from various prominent East Coast colleges and universities, sharing and discussing news on the activities of the federal government as they affected institutions of higher education.
