Scope and content

Periodicals, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and documents relating to the Spanish Civil War, focusing on the call for international aid and relief. Periodicals include Les cahiers documentaires, a monthly bulletin of the Comités de défense de l'humanité; the Bulletin du Comité international de coordination et d'information pour l'aide à l'Espagne républicaine; Among Friends, published by Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade; and single issues of a few other titles. Pamphlets include a "Spanish dossier" prepared for the League of Nations in April 1938, texts of speeches on the war, including ones by Juan Negrín, Angel Ossorio y Gallardo, and Manuel Azaña, President of Spain; a white paper on the Italian intervention in Spain, prepared by the Comité franco-espagnol in Paris; and polemical pamphlets on wartime destruction, atrocities, and child refugees. Clippings and documents include articles and texts of speeches from the Paris sessions of the second Congrès international des écrivains (International Congress of Writers for the Defence of Culture) in 1937, including speeches by Heinrich Mann and Langston Hughes (in French). Collection also includes a photograph of an unidentified young man and identification documents for faculty members at the University of Madrid.
