Biographical / Historical
St. James African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, on Cleveland Avenue in Ithaca, New York, was founded in 1833. Built in 1836, the church building is the oldest church in Ithaca, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Edward Newton was an active member of the church at the turn of the 20th century, and also hosted the initial meetings of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at his home.
