Scope and content

Photographs of campesinos (peasant farmers) taken during the Chilean land reform campaign, and covering the entire length of the country, from the Altacama desert to Chiloé. Included are scenes of farmers riding horses, working with sheep and cattle, and selling produce at an outdoor market. Also included are closeup portraits of individuals.

Biographical / Historical

Solon Barraclough worked for the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Latin America; he also taught at Cornell University at one time. He was an authority on rural development and spearheaded the 1960s land reform programs that the United States supported in response to the Cuban revolution. He later served as Director of the United Nations' Research Institute for Social Development in Geneva, Switzerland.
