Scope and content

Two letters written by Alonzo B. Cornell and four receipts written by others. The receipts concern payments made for army allotments to the families of soldiers of the 137th New York Volunteers infantry regiment during the Civil War. The two letters, both written in 1893, express Alonzo Cornell's wishes that the original allotment roll of the 137th Regiment from October 1864 be deposited in the Cornell Library. The letters are addressed to Jacob Gould Schurman, President of Cornell University, and George Harris, the University Librarian.

Biographical / Historical

Alonzo Cornell, the son of Cornell University founder Ezra Cornell, served as a cashier and vice president with the First National Bank of Ithaca from 1864-1869, and as a director of Western Union Telegraph Company from 1868-1876. He also became involved in politics, and served as Governor of New York from 1880-1882.
