Biographical / Historical
On January 7, 2015, in retaliation for cartoons that they viewed as blasphemous against Islam, a small group of Islamic extremists attacked the headquarters of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, killing 12 people, including the editor, staff cartoonists, and policemen. The public reaction was swift and emphatic, with large rallies of people carrying signs saying "Je suis Charlie" (I am Charlie), and many other comments from people around the world in defense of freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
