Scope and content

Typescript, leaflets, and newspaper articles concerning the laying of the cornerstone for the Tompkins County Public Library in 1968 and the dedication of the new library building in April 1969. The typescript document is a transcript of the proceedings at the dedication ceremony. The newspaper articles include a multi-page "Library supplement" to the Ithaca Journal from February, 1969, including historical information on the Cornell Public Library and the transition to the new county-run library.

Biographical / Historical

Tompkins County Public Library, the successor to the Cornell Public Library, was built at the corner of Cayuga Street and Court Street in Ithaca, New York. Construction began in August 1967, the cornerstone was laid in April 1968, and construction was finished in December 1968. The new building was officially dedicated on April 20, 1969. Eventually the Library, needing more space, moved to a new building on the corner of Cayuga Street and Green Street, which opened in 2000.
