Detailed reports on conditions in South Africa in the form of a series of long typewritten letters from Severinghaus to Rogers. They are preceded by a typewritten note from Severinghaus to a Professor Andrae, conveying copies of the letters to him and asking for his comments. The letters discuss topics such as South Africa's potential for development, its mining and other industries, its agriculture, natural resources, and labor force, apartheid and race relations, national politics (including the election of 1948), and economic conditions.

Whitman J. Severinghaus was a staff member of the Institute of Current World Affairs who spent several years living in the Transvaal in South Africa. Walter S. Rogers was another Institute staff member who worked at the Institute's headquarters in New York City.

Founded in 1925, the Institute of Current World Affairs "fosters understanding of the world by immersing promising individuals in the study of a country, region, or globally important issue and sharing the benefits of their knowledge with society." The Institute awards fellowships to support this study.
