Biographical / Historical

William John Caparne was a horticularist and artist who was born in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England in 1855. In his horticultural work, he specialized in breeding and growing irises, for which he won numerous awards from the Royal Horticultural Society. He served as drawing-master at Oundle School in Northamptonshire, and he spent his later years living and painting landscapes on the island of Guernsey.
