Biographical / Historical

Joe Burns is the Irving Porter Church Professor of Engineering and Professor of Astronomy. He received a B.S. in naval architecture from Webb Institute and a Ph.D. from Cornell in 1966. In 1968, he joined the faculty of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, chaired T&AM, and directed its graduate program. He served as Vice Provost for Engineering and Physical Sciences from 2003-2007. He received Engineering's Cowie Teaching Prize in 2010. He has served on mnay advisory panels for NASA and the National Research Council, where he led the first decadal survey of planetary science.
