Biographical / Historical

Elisha Ruckman allegedly directed Abraham T. Hillyer to seize a quantity of oysters and clams from Royal Cowell in execution of a previous judgment in favor of Ruckman. Cowell then sued Ruckman in the New York State Supreme Court to recover the value of the oysters and clams, on the grounds that he was released from the previous judgment because he had declared bankruptcy. The court found in favor of Cowell; Ruckman appealed the verdict.
