Biographical / Historical
William Taber and George McBain were carpenters who contracted to erect a building for John T. Cooper in Albany, New York. Taber and McBain alleged that Cooper owed them money for their materials and work, whereas Cooper alleged that Taber and McBain owed him money for providing them with supplies. Taber and McBain sued Cooper for the money they claimed he owed them, plus damages. The New York State Supreme Court ruled in favor of Taber and McBain; Cooper appealed the verdict, so the case then went to the state Court of Appeals.
