Biographical / Historical

William R. Stevens and Lorenzo Gilbert were the owners of two boats which collided in the twilight on the Chenango Canal near Binghamton, New York. Gilbert's boat was allegedly on the wrong side of the canal at the time and did not have lights. In the resulting lawsuit, the judge found in favor of the plaintiff, Stevens. The case was appealed to the Broome County Court of Appeals.
