Biographical / Historical

William Wall was a rope manufacturer with a factory on Long Island which was insured by Howard Insurance Company (among others) beginning in 1843. After there was a fire in the building, Wall and others (not named) sued the insurance company over the rates it charged and disputed its interpretation of what the insurance covered. The case was decided in favor of the plaintiffs, so the defendants appealed to the New York State Court of Appeals.
