E. Huntington Saunders started the Yale Collegiate Institute, a school in Troy, New York, and hired Sarah M. Coventry as a teacher there. A few weeks later the school was closed, and Sarah Coventry's position ended. She subsequently filed suit against Saunders for breach of contract, claiming he did not pay her the promised salary.
