Scope and content

Manuscripts, printed pamphlets, and other items on various subjects, mainly concerning the New York State Supreme Court, with a few items concerning teasels and also church activities (mainly Methodist). Included are records of several New York State Supreme Court cases, including two volumes of typescript stenographer's minutes in the case of Georgie B. Van Liew vs. Willard C. VanLiew, November 1886-January 1887. The VanLiew case involves impotence, which the plaintiff considers to be fraud in the marital contract. The issues in the other cases are inheritance disputes, unpaid debts, and action taken by a bank without notifying its stockholders. One pamphlet also recounts the contested state senator's race in Dutchess County in 1891.

Scope and content

Also included are two photographs, of a man and a woman, circa 1860; an order for teasels from Germania Mills, Holyoke, Massachusetts, 1892; a price list for teasels, 1883-1884; the Sunday School Journal (Methodist publication), April 1, 1897; official minutes of the Central New York Conference (of Methodists), Ithaca, New York, 1893; and an issue of The Baptist Teacher for Sunday school workers, February 1897.

Biographical / Historical

John H. Gregory owned a business, John H. Gregory & Son (also known as J.H. & E.R. Gregory), selling teasels in Skaneateles, N.Y. Until it was superseded by a metal card in the 20th century, the fuller's teasel (the flower head of the plant, Dipsacus fullonum sativus) was used in textile processing to brush and raise the nap of fabrics, especially wool.
