Scope and content

Manuscript and print items by or about Gary Snyder, together with an undated photograph of him giving a reading. Manuscript items include a poem written in ink and signed "Gary S.," and a typewritten invitation to a party for Snyder and his family (undated). Print items include three offprints (two of poems by Snyder, and one of an essay on Snyder and Cid Corman by Mark E. Reames, Jr.); Janus (literary periodical), volume 2, number 3 (February 1951), containing a poem by Snyder; three pamphlets from poetry conferences; a flyer advertising a workshop by Snyder; and a Spring 1984 course catalog from UC Berkeley Extension including a course by Snyder on Zen and poetry.

Biographical / Historical

American poet. Born in San Francisco, Snyder grew up on small farms in the Pacific Northwest; studied forestry, linguistics, Chinese and Japanese at various universities; worked at a variety of manual-labor jobs; and studied Buddhism in Japan from 1956-1968. He began as one of the Beat poets, and went on to develop a distinctive style based on countercultural values and ecological awareness. He won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1975.
