Biographical / Historical

Samantha S. Nivison founded a children's home in Hammonton, New Jersey, Dryden Springs Sanitarium (Dryden, New York), and Cascadilla Place hospital (Ithaca, New York), the last of which she described as "an institution for the treatment of the sick, and the education of females as physicians and nurses." The Cascadilla Place hospital ran out of funds before the building was finished, but the Hammonton and Dryden Springs institutions continued in existence until Nivison's death in 1906. She numbered among her friends many prominent Cornell University faculty, including Goldwin Smith, Moses Coit Tyler, and Albert Prentiss, as well as the University's founder, Ezra Cornell.
