Scope and content

Manuscript notes from Priestcraft Exposed ..., and manuscript copies of advertisements and articles relating to Spalding's business dealings, including real estate, mill work, and retail sales, mainly in Lockport, Niagara County, New York. Most of the advertisements cited appeared in the Niagara Courier. Also, a manuscript copy of Spalding's petition to the New York State Legislature for compensation for the interruption to his mill and other business holdings from 1838-1859, while the State was enlarging the Erie Canal. All of the notes in the collection were evidently written retrospectively.

Biographical / Historical

Merchant, reformer, abolitionist. Lyman A. Spalding was a Quaker merchant involved in manufacturing and banking in New York State and the Midwest, and real estate and lumbering in Michigan Territory early in the 19th century. He was an active member in the abolition movement, edited the periodical Plain Truth, and established the newspaper Priestcraft Exposed and Primitive Christianity Defended.
