Typewritten reminiscences of Spalding's childhood and youth in upstate New York, including experiences in the War of 1812, personalities and religious affiliations of family members, working in the general store owned by Samuel Allen, the growth of Lockport, land purchases and building a mill there, and family illnesses and deaths. Written for the information of his grandson, Lyman A. Spalding III. Also included is an issue of the Lockport Daily Advertiser, volume 1, number 274 (January 9, 1855).

Biographical / Historical

Merchant, reformer, abolitionist. Lyman A. Spalding was a Quaker merchant involved in manufacturing and banking in New York State and the Midwest, and real estate and lumbering in Michigan Territory early in the 19th century. He was an active member in the abolition movement, edited the periodical Plain truth, and established the newspaper Priestcraft exposed and primitive Christianity defended.
