Scope and content

Letters and a few legal documents concerning financial and military affairs before, during, and after the American Revolution, written by various people, mainly in Connecticut and New Jersey, with a few from New York City and Pennsylvania. Included are a document written by attorney Benjamin Chew, filing suit against Henry Heiger at Easton, Pennsylvania for refusing to pay a debt of five pounds (1758); a letter from Joseph Chew to Sir William Johnson, Baronet, informing him that some "gentlemen from Long Island" are interested in buying some of his land, and passing on some political gossip (1776); a letter from Jonathan G. Tompkins and William Duer [?] to Major General Wooster, and another two from Lord Stirling (William Alexander) to Major General Lincoln, about finding forage for the troops (1777-1778); a letter from Joseph Chew to Killian Van Rensselaer, in Chew's capacity as the executor for Sir William Johnson's will (1792); and a note from Sarah Alexander, Lady Stirling, appointing attorney Elias Boudinot to act on her behalf at a stockholders' meeting of the Bank of the United States (dated only December 22).
