Biographical / Historical

Civil engineer. Professor Paulus Pieter Bijlaard was born in Holland in 1898 and graduated as a civil engineer from the Technical University, Delft in 1920. He served as a bridge engineer for the Netherlands East Indies State Railways, designing bridges until his appointment in 1828 as Professor of Bridge and Structural Engineeing at the Technical University in Bandoeng, Java, Indonesia, a position he held until 1948. He spent three years in a Japanese concentration camp in Indonesia during World War II, returning to Holland in 1947. He came to Cornell in 1949 as Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and became Professor in 1951. In 1957 he transferred to the Dept. of Mechanics, becoming Professor of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics until his retirement in 1966. He died in March 1967.
