Scope and content

Individual leaves from early printed books: a hand-colored leaf (leaf [91]) from Hartmann Schedel's Liber chronicarum, 1493 (known as the Nuremberg chronicle), including a woodcut depicting the city of Toulouse, France; and a hand-colored leaf (leaf [97]) from the book Das Concilium geschehen zu Constanz, by Ulrich von Richental (also spelled Richenthal), 1483, containing woodcuts depicting coats of arms claimed to be "the three oldest heraldic devices in the world" ("die ersten drey Wappen inder Welt"): those of "Abisay" (Abishaìˆ), King David's nephew; "Sabytay" (Sabubay), one of David's generals; and "Bananyas" (Banayahu), captain of David's personal guard and later commander of Solomon's armies in the Old Testament. Richental also included the so-called "Caesar's Triad" in his book: three different legendary coats of arms (Fabelwappen) attributed to Julius Caesar. Das Concilium geschehen zu Constanz was the first printed book containing coats of arms.
