Scope and content

Collection includes 8x10 glossy stills from film and production shots from films produced in Ithaca. Among the most prominent are Patria, Beartice Fairfax, The Eagles Eye, The Mysteries of Myra, The Exploits of Elaine and The Perils of Pauline. The collection also includes press clippings and articles on film production in Ithaca, publicity shots of personalities, special showings and ads such as "Essanay Five-A-Week" which announce coming local showings. Of special interest is an article mentioning the last picture filmed in Ithaca, If Women Only Knew, featuring the burning of the bachelor clubhouse (Umphville) on the west shore of Lake Cayuga. There are also photos of Wharton Studio on Lake Cayuga and publicity shots of Buttermilk Falls. Also of interest is an ad for "Essanay Five-A-Week" films featuring "Football Days at Cornell." There are two larger albums which contain promotional material for The Exploits of Elaine, Beatrix Fairfax, and Patria and a third binder with press releases and ads for several studios from Melies and Edison to Biograph and Fox Movietone.

Arthur Niedeck, Cornell University M.A. 1942, wrote a masters thesis on theaters in Ithaca, New York. He also was working on Ithaca filmmaking.
