Scope and content

Photographs include images of Ohrdruf and Buchenwald immediately after liberation in April 1945, taken by the US Army photographer accompanying General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander, who deliberately set out to create a record of the atrocities committed by the Nazis. A second group of photographs includes aerial panoramic images of Monte Cassino and urban areas during the Allied campaign to liberate Italy. A third group of photographs consists of Nazi propaganda images, such as photographs of Hitler and other Nazi officials; these photographs have extensive captions in German on the verso.

Biographical / Historical

Fred Voss was born in Aachen and fled Germany in 1939. After emigrating to the United States, he served in the US Army during the liberation of France and Germany. He married Ilse Machauf of Vienna, like him a Jewish refugee from the Nazi Greater German Reich. Both lost many relatives to extermination by the Nazis.
