Scope and content

This collection consists of notes taken by Robert Pringle from the Sarawak (Malaysia) Archives in 1965-66. Mr. Pringle was a graduate student of Southeast Asian history at Cornell at that time, focusing upon the Iban people under Brooke Rule. The notes taken contributed to his dissertation, which was completed in 1967 and published in 1970 by Cornell University Press as Rajahs and Rebels, the Ibans of Sarawak under Brooke Rule, 1841-1941.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Pringle was born in New York City in 1936. He graduated from Harvard with a BA in American History in 1958 and completed his PhD in Southeast Asian History from Cornell University in 1967. He served thirty-seven years as an officer in the US Foreign Service, with placements in Indonesia, the Philippines, Upper Volte (now Burkina Faso), Papua New Guinea, South Africa, and Mali, where he was Ambassador from 1987-1990.
