The Franklin Moore Papers document the extensive research, teaching, and administrative activities and publications of the Joseph C. Ford Professor of Mechanical Engineering Emeritus at Cornell University, Franklin K. Moore (1922-2016), dating from 1934 to 2004. The collection includes research subject files with notes, scientific papers, publications, presentations, and lectures; various reports, correspondence, and annual meetings of organizations, memberships, and committees in which professor F. K. Moore was involved; memorandums, reports, and correspondence related to research programs, consulting, and several collaborations; There are also publications with papers, reviews, drafts, notes, and reprints; course work, including notebooks, handwritten and research subject notes, proposals, grants, and reviews. Photographs, slides, HVS, CD, and several transparencies cover a wide range of scientific areas Professor Moore was studying. The collection also includes documentation on patents, graduate student files, fellowship nominations, peer reviews, correspondence, and administrative files.

Biographical / Historical
Franklin K. Moore (1922–2016) was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on August 24, 1922. He grew up in Glen Rock, New Jersey, and graduated from Ridgewood High School. In 1944, he earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with distinction from Cornell University. Later, he served for two years in the U.S. Army. In 1946, Franklin K. Moore married Nancy Smyth and moved to Ithaca, NY. They both took classes at Cornell on the GI bill. In 1949 Franklin K. Moore completed his doctorate in Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University under the supervision of William R. Sears. After graduation, he worked as an aerodynamics research engineer at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), now NASA, Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio. During this period, F.K. Moore focused on the problems of screech in rocket engines and rotating stall in turbomachinery compressors. He also served as editor of The Theory of Laminar Flows. In 1955, Professor Moore became the Director of the Aerosciences Division of the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratories (CAL) in Buffalo, NY. His research focused on hypersonic flight and high-temperature aerodynamics associated with the re-entry into the atmosphere of warheads and, later, Gemini and Apollo capsules. In 1960, Franklin K. Moore and W. E. Gibson formulated a nonlinear equation in their paper “Propagation of weak disturbances in a gas subject to relaxation effects” which is largely quoted as the Moore-Gibson-Thompson or M-G-T equation. In 1965, Professor Moore was appointed as the Joseph C. Ford Professor of Engineering, returning to Ithaca, NY. He taught in Cornell's School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for 28 years until his retirement in 1993. During his sabbatical leave in 1981-1982, Professor Moore served as the Addison P. Rothrock Visiting Scientist at the NASA Lewis Research Center. During this time, he took a fresh look at the issues of rotating stall and surge and aerodynamic instabilities in turbomachinery compressors. He also collaborated closely with Professor Ed Greitzer of MIT, developing a system of equations known as the ‘Moore-Greitzer’ theory of compressor stability. F.K. Moore was a member of several professional, scientific, and honorary societies, such as the National Academy of Engineering (1984), the Committee on Microgravity Research, the Committee on Space Science Technology Planning, the Panel on Propulsion, American Physical Society, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Phi, and others. He was also a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a member of the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Research Council (two terms). He is a recipient of NASA's Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal (1985) for his "numerous scientific contributions to understanding the fluid mechanics of aeronautics and space propulsion systems.”
