Scope and content

A collection of several publications from the 1919 Hungarian Soviet Republic. Includes publications issued by the government of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919 and some contemporary issues of the illustrated weekly Érdekes Újság, which offers numerous photo-documents of public gatherings and images of the chief players in the Hungarian Communist Party. Also, issues of the periodical Munkáskönyvtár; an issue of "Magyarország véradója melyet a Habsburgonak fiztett 1914-töl 1918-ig"; an issue of "Miért nincs értelme a bankjegyelrejtésnek?"; an issue of Közalkalmazott - és "közalkalmazott"; an issue of "A Magyarorszagi Szocialdemokrata Part PROGRAMMJA ÉS SZERVEZETI SZABÁLYZATA"; an issue of Spartacus, one of only three issues published, immediately before the revolution, in January 1919; several issues of Tanácsköztársasági Törvénytár (the code of laws of the Hungarian Soviet Republic); and the first issue of Uj idök, a socialist journal on art, literature and science. Also included is a pamphlet, A kommunista forradalom irányelvei, the manifesto and the accepted theses of the Third International's Second Congress. Photographs include a postcard photo of a demonstration on May 1, 1919, and a large gelatin silver print showing some of the damage done by Monitor missiles to the Hungária Hotel, signed by photographer Imre Révész-Biró.

Scope and content

Additional publications include photographs of Dezső Bokányi and Commissar József Pogány making speeches in Parliament, socialist and communist pamphlets, a portrait of János Anka by Oszkar Lázár, and photographs of monuments erected during the Hungarian Soviet Republic. Pamphlets include A művészet a burzsoa és kommunista társadalomban, by Emile Vanderweld; Utmutató a szociálista iradalomban, by Ignác Rózsa; Kommunizaljuk-e Zsófit?; Kisebb munka, nagyuobb kenyér!; Proletárkultura, proletárművészet, by Zsigmond Kunfi; Dózsa katonája vagy urak kutyája?; A kommunista rend jóéletének alapelvei; Paplak és templom; Szózat az ifjákhoz! by Péter Kropotkin (1919 edition of a pamphlet originally published in 1880); and two scores for the Internationale, the leftist anthem.

Biographical / Historical

The shortlived 1919 Hungarian Soviet Republic lasted from March 21 to August 6 of that year. It had ousted the Hungarian Democratic Republic of 1918, was crushed by the Romanian army and succeeded by the Kingdom of Hungary. Publications issued by the Communist government were destroyed at the time of the Romanian occupation and subsequent rule of Miklós Horthy through 1945; the Communist regime after 1948 destroyed and suppressed additional documents from this period, so surviving political publications of this time are very uncommon.
