Copies of letters, primarily from Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White to Read. Also a letter to Charles Kendall Adams and Adams' response discussing History Academies and the American Historical Association, 1887. Two letters from Jacob Gould Schurman discussing the 25th Anniversary of Cornell and the birthday of Henry W. Sage, 1893. A dinner program and request for addresses for the March 31, 1886 reception of the New York Association of Cornell University for President Adams at Delmonico's. Program with the schedule of events for the Class of 1886 commencement week. Typescript titled Cornell University and Its Founder giving the history of Ezra Cornell and his family, his travels, time in Congress, the telegraph. The manuscript is written in both biographical and autobiographical format with sections appearing to be recorded from an oral history with Ezra Cornell. One section is titled, taken down from Mr. Cornell's own lips by General John Meredith Read, Albany New York, December 3, 1867. Other sections appear to be from letters written by Cornell. Also a typescript a letter to Read from W. E. Lucas discussing the New York Association dinner and a copy of Read's remarks at the event. Also a letter from A. D. White discussing Professor Diman, 1867 and a notice titled Mr. Horace Greeley's Resolution on the Reverend Amos Brown (President of the People's College) attempting to secure employment for Brown at Cornell for his services surrounding the Land Grant.

Biographical / Historical
John Meredith Read, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1837; graduated from Brown University and Albany Law School; served as Adjutant-General of the State of New York, 1860-1866; United States Consul-General for France and Algiers, 1869-1873; Acting Consul-General of The German Government in France, 1870-1872; United States Minister to Greece, 1873-1879; died in Paris, France, 1896. Read was one of the original members of Cornell University's Board of Trustees listed in the University's Charter; he served from 1865 to 1873.
