Scope and content

Manuscript for "When Love Becomes Words: The Life of Laura (Riding) Jackson," an early version (2000) of Friedmann's biography, eventually titled "A Mannered Grace: The Life of Laura (Riding) Jackson (2005). Publicity from Persea Books for "Four Unposted Letters to Catherine," by Laura Riding with an afterword by Elizabeth Friedmann and Alan J. Clark. Also annotated proofs of poems; letter from Livingston L. Biddle to Laura Jackson about a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship grant and her response, 1979; Letter to Mrs. Schuyler Jackson from Millicent D. Also papers originally willed to Cornell, but kept on loan by Friedmann including correspondence and reports on Joyce Wexler's dissertation about L(R)J; correspondence on Martin Seymour-Smith's 1982 biography of Robert Graves; correspondence and commentary on T. S. Matthews' book "Jacks or Better" (1977); folders of writings on poetry. Manuscript materials related to "Later-Life Commentaries." Personal memorabilia including correspondence, old address book, photograph album, box of customer files from fruit shipping business, and box of family photographs, 1970s and 1980s. Materials related to "Under the Mind's Watch," edited by John Nolan and Alan Clark; inscribed copy of E.E. Cummings: A Paradox of Non-Difficulty," by Dorith Ofri-Scheps; and "carbon materials for a fugitive essay." Also materials relating to "Early Poems," clippings on Robert Graves and miscellaneous clippings, and folder of letters to editors of literary reference books. Legal documents, including will and estate folders and publishing contracts. Reel of L(R) J Harvard recording; completed ms. of the early poems; and two proof copies of T.S. Matthews' "Jacks or Better," top copy heavily marked by James F. Mathias.
