Biographical / Historical
Many collections of archaeologically-recovered artifacts remain relatively or completely undocumented. These collections, in museums or the private hands of avocational archaeologists and collectors, provide a rich resource for better understanding the material culture of a region and its past communities. Unfortunately, information about these collections is often inaccessible to the general researcher. Furthermore, artifact assemblages from specific sites are often exceedingly fragmented among private and institutional holders, making comparative and comprehensive research at the site level difficult. The Cornell University Archaeological Collections Documentation Project seeks to provide detailed reports on individual collections with specific provenance information to facilitate more informed research of the past Iroquois communities in the Finger Lakes Region. The project was initiated in 2007 by Professor Kurt Jordan, who serves as Series Editor, and graduate students Adam Dewbury and Beth Ryan of the Cornell Anthropology Department.
