Correspondence primarily with Arthur A. Allen relating to Stuart's interest in ornithology, especially bird photography, including letters relating to the Life Magazine photo-essay contest; correspondence with Allen, Gustav Swanson, and others relating to the Laboratory of Ornithology Council, to Lab operations, funding, and publishing projects; Council minutes; and correspondence with Peter Paul Kellogg about bird recordings published by the Lab.

Biographical / Historical

Lyman K. Stuart (1898-1964) attended Cornell and became a businessman in Newark, N.Y. He became interested in ornithology in the early 1950s and won first place in a national photo-essay contest sponsored by Life Magazine. He served as a member of the Council of the Laboratory of Ornithology for many years, purchased the original Sapsucker Woods land for Cornell, and provided funding for the original headquarters of the lab, which was named for him.
