Scope and content

Includes carte-de-visite photographs of members of the Class of 1871; lecture notebooks, including English history with Goldwin Smith and zoology; a letter from Sewell to his aunt regarding the cost of his room and board while attending Cornell and explaining how he met those expenses; a photograph and autograph album of the Class of 1873, Albany Law School; Sewell's first license to practice law in New York State; a judge's gavel; and numerous formal invitations and programs for official New York State governmental functions, Cornell University trustees' activities, and Cornell alumni activities. Also a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondence kept by Commander W. Elbridge Sewell during the Spanish American War.

Business and family letters to and from Albert J. Sewell; 10 letters by W. Elbridge Swell, written from the Steamer "Blake"; other documents, including receipts for Cornell tuition; printed broadsides; and one unidentified carte-de-visite photograph of a woman.

Biographical / Historical

Albert H. Sewell entered Cornell when the university opened in 1868 and graduated in 1871. He received an LL.B degree from Albany Law School and practiced law in Walton, Delaware County, N.Y. He later became a New York State Assemblyman, and a New York Supreme Court judge. His brother, Commander William Elbridge Sewell served in the Navy from 1866 to 1904, worked on the U.S. Coast Survey, and served as Governor of Guam from 1903 until his death in 1904.
