Scope and content

Letter from Robert Collyer to Cornell President Charles Kendall Adams describing Collyer's youth and his employment in Yorkshire factories from 1831 to 1838 and routine business notes to Adams (May 6, 1896, December 28, 1898, December 14, 1899.) Includes five printed items: "The King's Question," by Collyer, in Messiah Pulpit, Vol. VI, Dec. 13, 1901; "In the Spirit on the Lord's Day," by Collyer, in Messiah Pulpit, Vol. ViI, June 5, 1903; "The Joy in Harvest," by Collyer in The Christian Register, Nov. 23, 1911; "Weekly Calendar of the Church and Messiah," Dec. 8, 1912; "Robert Collyer: Saint and Seer," memorial sermon by the Reverend John Haynes Holmes, Jan. 1913.

Scope and content

Additional items include a brief history by Margaret Walker of Ilkley, Yorkshire, concerning Robert Collyer, his father, Samuel, and the bell from the mill at Fewston, Yorkshire, where Collyer worked as a young boy; a large framed description of this bell; a letter (Nov. 1930) from William F. E. Gurley '77 concerning the church built for Collyer and his Chicago congregation with the aid of contributions from Cornell students; photographs of this church, the Methodist church in Fewston where Collyer was baptized, and the Fewston bell; related pamphlets and clippings. Also 5 nails from the horseshoe which Collyer made at the Sibley blacksmith shop at Cornell (1871).
