Biographical / Historical

Class of 1916 Professor of English, Emeritus. M.H. Abrams came to Cornell in 1945 and has spent his entire career at Cornell. The creator of the Norton Anthology of English Literature, he is perhaps best known as the author of The Mirror and the Lamp: Romantic Theory and the Critical Tradition and Natural Supernaturalism: Tradition and Revolution in Romantic Literature. On January 29, 2007, the M.H. Abrams Distinguished Visiting Professorship, funded by Stephen H. Weiss '57, was inaugurated with a symposium featuring Sandra M. Gilbert and Professor Abrams speaking on "On Reading Poetry Aloud.".
