Biographical / Historical

Lawyer. Edward Hirshfeld graduated from Harvard University in 1972 and earned a law degree and an M.B.A. from Cornell in 1976. He joined the firm of Gardner, Carton & Douglas in Chicago and was made a partner in 1983. In 1988 he joined the legal department of the American Medical Association as associate general counsel for health law, litigation and policy. He later became vice president of private sector advocacy and associate general counsel of the AMA. He died in 1998. To commemorate his lifelong love of nature, his famiy dedicated an observation tower in his name in the wetlands preserve at the Cornell Plantations. He was the grandson of Howard Edward Babcock.
