In 1974, when the People's Republic of China began to permit visitors from the U.S., Dr. John Ferger was selected as the first person from the Ithaca area to join a US-China Peoples' Friendship Association (USCPFA) delegation to go to China. In the US, the USCPFA was a loosely knit, non-profit, voluntary organization; in China it had semi-official status. The delegation had official interpreters/guides who traveled with them as they visited elementary and high schools, colleges, medical schools, clinics, factories, communes, and peasants' homes. Since there were a number of doctors and other medical personnel on the tour, they were taken to a large number of medical facilities. In their spare time, they could walk around the city without the guides. These posters, probably produced by communes, were bought in local bookstores.
