Scope and content

Album of photographs dated between 1870 and 1910. Some illustrations from magazines. Includes invoice for purchase by The Heye Foundation. Some of the photos are colored. The photos show various aspects of frontier and Indian life in Montana and Missouri. There is a typed note inside the cover from Huffman written at Miles Creek, Montana and a signed picture of Huffman. Included are photos of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, cowboys, and ranchers, the battle field of Little Bighorn with the grave markers of J. J. Crittenden, Myles Keogh, and James Sturgis, hunting and skinning buffalo, and sheep herding. Many portrait photos of individuals including Jennie Wallace, Spotted Eagle, Scorched Lightning, Man-On-The-Hill, Fire Wolf, High Bear, Two Moon, Spotted Bear, Mrs. Bad Gun, Mrs White Elk, Red Sleeve, Good Eye, Plenty Bird, American Horse, Brave Wolf, Buffalo Hump, White Hawk, Spotted Fawn, Wolf Voice, Tall Bear, Black Wolf, and Isaac Crabtree. Locations include Hell Creek, Pumpkin Creek Powder River, Lame Deer, Hanging Deer Creek, Yellowstone and Miles Creek.

Biographical / Historical

L. A. Huffman spent most of his life photographing the area around his Montana home. He worked at Fort Keogh before starting his own studio selling prints of his glass plate negatives. His photos capture frontier and Indian life.
